Brown, Harold "Breezy" Edwin -
Plainwell - Son of Reon David and Velma (Hurley) Brown. Youngest sibling to sister Beatrice and brother LaVerne. Harold attended Bridge Street Elementary and then Plainwell High School, which at that time was directly across the street from his family home. In high school Harold played football and ran track and earned his lifelong nickname of Breezy from Coach Streidl. While in high school Harold met his future wife Nancy Harsh. In those years he was known for his motorcycle, ducktail haircut, white t-shirt and leather jacket. Nancy’s family quickly accepted Harold into their family and on October 12, 1957 Harold and Nancy married at the Plainwell Presbyterian Church and honeymooned in Traverse City. After high school Harold went to work for The Angle Steel Corporation as a draftsman and then Hammond Machinery Builders as an engineering technician. He also served his country in the Air National Guard. In 1972 Nancy and Breezy opened Brown’s Family Inn which quickly became a local favorite restaurant. Breezy later worked at the North American Aluminum Corporation and then Wright Coating Technologies as a maintenance supervisor. Breezy ended his working career as the ultimate Mr. Fixit at William Crispe Community House. Breezy was a member of the Jaycees and spent 37 years as an active member of the Gun Plains Township volunteer fire department. Breezy was also proud to be a blood donor and rarely missed an opportunity to donate. In 1961, Nancy gave birth to their first son, William David (Bill), and then in 1965 to their second son, Patrick Lee. Breezy liked to relax and enjoyed time with his family on various vacations. Nancy & Breezy also loved their visits to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula where they vacationed for over 20 years with longtime friends Larry & Patsy Nyberg. He was known by many and it was rare for him to travel without seeing someone he knew. Members of Harold’s family include his first wife of over 48 years Nancy (Harsh) Brown (deceased), his children Bill (Deb) Brown of Plainwell, Patrick (Laura) Brown of Rochester Hills, his grandchildren Joshua, Rachel (Jorge), Zebulun (Shayla); Ethan (Faith) and Logan, his great grandchildren Jorge Jr, Moises, Kylina, Ramses; and Nevaeh. Siblings include Beatrice (Wayne) VanWeelden of Portage and LaVerne Brown (Carol Hood) of Florida. His in-laws include Michael (MaryAnne) Harsh of Ohio, Edith Harsh (Clinton Wheeler) of Lansing, and William Harsh, of Plainwell. He also had numerous beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. Harold connected with former classmate Marlene (Boughton) Evans later in life and they married in May 2008. They lived in Portage and wintered in Lady Lake, Florida. Members of Harold’s extended family by way of his 2nd marriage include Marlene’s sister Gloria Kirch (deceased), brother Michael (Mary) Boughton, daughters Michelle (Jon) Fox and Dianna (Richard) Hanshew. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or funeral service at this time. The most common thoughts received about Breezy have been that he was a great guy with a good laugh and kind to all.
